Vox HUMANA Architects
Vox Humana Architects is a small, bespoke, Johannesburg based architectural practice consisting of young SACAP-registered professionals (SA Council for the Architectural Profession) involved in the design of new buildings and additions from project inception through to project hand-over.
The company was established in 2006. It is a Sole Proprietorship and consists of: Principal Architect: Luigi Salemi and Support Staff Member: Eugene Cloete (M.Arch. Wits 2012), both of whom studied and graduated in Johannesburg.
The Principal Architect, Luigi Salemi (Pr. Arch. SACAP 6949, B.Arch. Wits 1999) has had 6 years valuable European experience, gaining a deep architectural sensibility between 1999-2004; in Budapest, Hungary first for Gyorgy Vadász and Company Architectural Studio (from whom the name “Vox Humana” = “Human Voice”, originates) and thereafter at Kima Stúdió. This was followed by work in Rome for A.B.D.R. Architects. In both countries he worked on numerous projects of various size and complexity. These were followed by two years working for Nicholas Whitcutt Architects in Johannesburg, which established him with a solid foundation and experience in the local construction industry and methods and then began his own practice. Eugene Cloete joined the company in May 2012 after completing his architectural studies in Johannesburg. Preceding that, he studied Advertising with specialization in Art Direction.
What do we offer?
Vox Humana Architects are involved in the design of new buildings and additions from project inception through to project hand-over. The scope of work that we have produced, to date, includes a number of high-quality small to medium projects ranging from residential, institutional/commercial and ecclesial buildings, with an emerging specialization in sacred architecture. A small contingent of our studio is also involved in the design of custom-made timber furniture and fittings, working with a number of carpenters and joiners. We are available to be involved in designs and site supervision all over South Africa. Please refer to our Services page for a more detailed breakdown of the services that we offer.
What is our Approach?
The Latin meaning of Vox Humana is “Human Voice” as our Client’s needs are of utmost importance to us, including their unspoken need for Beauty. The satisfaction of those we work for and the offering of our end-result to the Architectural Environment are our priority. Our approach to architectural work is an attempt to respond to a human need, from practical considerations of space and function, to a deeper need each person has for Beauty. Our aim is that each project should not only be designed to resolve programmatic and pragmatic problems but to create places that direct the person beyond the immediate to Something beyond, working with the available context and financial means at the Client’s disposal.
Since construction is such a costly and time-consuming investment, our preference is to work as Principal Agents from the beginning of the project to the end: to accompany the Client through the Construction phase until hand-over; to ensure that the building contractor executes the project to the best quality, and that the Client should not have to manage variations (which inevitably emerge) alone. This approach is in the best interest of the building which will be left as a legacy once completed. In our experience this method of working delivers the best possible architecture.
