Olievenhoutbosch Mingha Jane Furse HIV/TB Clinics
Three HIV/TB Clinics in three different locations in the country within three months, constructed from shipping containers retrofitted and outfitted off site.
We were presented with the challenge to create three HIV/TB Clinics in three different locations in the country within three months by FPD (The Foundation for Professional Development) & US Aid. The entire design and construction process had to take place over December break!
We placed four 40 foot containers in a square, creating a central covered courtyard. The containers were used as: consulting rooms (potential HIV patients), consultation rooms (brief those who tested HIV positive), ablutions, resting/tea room, pharmacy, data capture room, laboratory to test urine- & blood samples, and a space for TB sufferers to produce cough samples. The courtyard space was utilized as waiting and reception area.
The biggest challenge was separating HIV & TB sufferers, as HIV patients are much more vulnerable to contracting other diseases. This was achieved by having two separate entrances, as well as using eucalyptus screens together with old container doors to screen off the entrances. Secondly we achieved 12 air changes (instead of the required 8) per hour through utilizing multiple evaporative-cooling elements to rapidly drawing air out of the courtyard and containers, to speedily evacuate possible air born viruses.
Due to the size of shipping containers, we insulate the containers on the outside. All the interior fitting, insulation & plaster work was done in the factory in Gauteng before the containers were trucked to the various sites. The containers were then placed on prepared soil ‘mattress’ with insulation board on it, the roof over the courtyard was assembled and covered with a recycled advertisement board ‘canvas’ and soil with grass sods. Eucalyptus laths were installed on frames over the windows, (to reduce heat build-up by direct sunlight on the windows in summer), the services were connected and the units were handed over to the clients, within the allocated three months.
